Kya Karine fell in love with playing music at a very young age. She started by studying voice and playing violin but when she picked up her first bass as a teenager something about it stole her heart for good. In 2017 Kya graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance where she meticulously studied all of the great Jazz bassists, her favorites being Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, and Ron Carter. Kya has been lucky enough to be personally mentored by phenomenal musicians and educators such as Kris Johnson, David Halliday, Phillip Kuehn, Felix Pastorious, Rodney Whitaker, and Javon Jackson to name a few.
Since graduating, Kya has been voraciously working on her craft. She has had the opportunity to play with musicians such as Loren Allred (The Greatest Showman), Rashawn Ross (Dave Matthew's Band), Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and David Osmond. She spent nearly two years learning about the business and marketing side of music by working as Caleb Chapman's Executive Assistant, founder and chairman of Caleb Chapman's Soundhouse (65 time DownBeat award winning and 11 time Best of State winning after-school music program). She has played shows all over the country with groups of every genre, ranging from an all-female Latin Group to Jazz Big Bands to Pop cover groups and most recently Bluegrass and Americana groups. Not only has she worked extensively as a sideman to help people bring their original music to life, she facilitates and manages several of her own groups.
In December of 2019, she put out her debut record on all platforms: a Lone Peak Sound Christmas jazz album titled "Christmas Fire," co-released with David Halliday, and the album was added to Spotify's editorial playlist "New Music Holiday" where it garnered 25,000 streams the week before Christmas.
In March of 2020 she relocated to Los Angeles to record an album of original musical with Salt Lake City native group Band on the Moon. The album was produced by renowned studio engineer Lior Goldenberg (Allen Stone, Macy Gray, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, etc). Despite the pandemic, they were able to complete the project and expect to release the album early 2021.
Today Kya works full-time as a freelance musician on both upright and electric bass. As of October 2020 she is pursuing a Masters Degree in Popular Music from University of West London. She is lucky enough to be the full time bassist for several groups including Band On The Moon, The Backyard Revival, Lonesome Folk, and Uptown Sound. She founded and manages a renowned 10-piece Amy Winehouse tribute band (Amy Jade's Beehive Society) and her own group (Kya K. & Co.) playing beloved jazz standards and popular songs from today.
